Wise County School Board Says Yes to Merger, Barely

The Wise County School Board has narrowly approved pursuing a merger with the city of Norton’s school division. After a 4-4 voting split, tiebreaker John Graham cast the deciding vote to accept a resolution that proposes Norton dissolve its school division, so that both Wise County and Norton can secure a favorable Local Composite Index, which is the formula Virginia uses to decide funding levels for schools. The City of Norton and the Wise County Board of Supervisors will also have to approve resolutions about the merger, for the plan to move forward.
