Wildfires spread through Letcher, Wise, and parts of Lee

Crews with the Virginia Division of Forestry spent Thursday battling a wildfire in Wise County that has spread from neighboring Letcher County, Kentucky.

Senior Area Forester Bill Miller says the blaze has consumed 25 acres in the Pound Gap area as the fire moved into Virginia by way of Pine Mountain located in Jenkins.

There are reports of heavy smoke in nearby towns such as Haysi and Clintwood.

Small forest fires are also being contained in Buchanan and Lee counties. Extreme dry conditions, wind and leaves on the forest floor are aiding in the fire's expansion.

No dwellings are currently in danger because of the blaze.

National Guard troops have been deployed in several Eastern Kentucky counties because of the wildfires, including air units that are dumping thousands of gallons of water on numerous fire spots including a fire in Pike County, Ky. that has spread over 1,200 acres.

In Virginia, the Abingdon forestry district that covers all of far Southwestern Virginia from Galax to Lee County has recorded 139 fires this year that has burned more than 5,500 acres- the most of any district in the state, according to VDF data.
