More than 50 people have been arrested in Wise County as the result of the first major drug-related mass arrest of 2016.
Wise County Commonwealth's Attorney Chuck Slemp announced the arrested on Thursday during a press conference at the Wise Count Justice Center.
On Wednesday and Thursday, several area law enforcement agencies combined forces to conduct a mass arrest of individuals who have recently been indicted by the multi-jurisdictional grand jury in over 90 indictments. The effort resulted in over 50 arrests. Law enforcement is continuing efforts to bring other wanted individuals to justice, Slemp said.
The arrests stem from an investigation by the Southwest Virginia Regional Drug Task Force involving illegal drug activity in Wise County and the City of Norton.
Seven different agencies were involved the arrests.
Individuals targeted for arrest have been recently indicted by the grand jury for drug related offenses, Slemp said. Offenses vary from distribution of synthetic narcotics, heroine, methamphetamine, and marijuana to crimes related to distribution of prescription narcotics such as morphine, oxycodone, and hydrocodone. The focus of the investigation is to target the illegal use and sale of dangerous drugs, particularly synthetic narcotics and prescription drug abuse.
