Virginia State Police Verifying Records

Virginia State Police are now manually verifying the records of more than 2,000 defendants that were found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity to make certain they are barred from purchasing firearms and that their name is on the Virginia Do Not Sell list. Gun ownership by an acquitted insane person is a crime in the Commonwealth, and state police said an internal review revealed a “human error” was made during the approval process by the Firearms Transaction Center which allowed Kashif Bashir to shoot an Alexandria officer in 2013 was recently allowed to purchase a gun after he was released from a mental health facility in 2018. His victim Officer Peter Laboy suffered life changing injuries and was forced to retire.
