VEC releases local unemployment rates

The Virginia Employment Commission has released local unemployment rates for August and three of the four highest rates in the state are in our region.

Buchanan County had the highest unemployment rate in the whole state at 10.8 percent. Dickenson County had the third highest rate with 9.7 percent. Wise County carried a rate of 8.6 percent which was the fourth highest rate in the state.

Here is the list of counties and cities in our area along with their unemployment rates:

Bristol – 5.2 percent

Buchanan – 10.8 percent

Dickenson – 9.7 percent

Lee – 6.8 percent

Norton – 7.2 percent

Russell – 6.4 percent

Scott – 4.6 percent

Smyth – 5.8 percent

Wise – 8.6 percent
