VA establishes mine rescue services

The Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals & Energy (DMME) is now providing mine rescue services, presenting on Friday the state’s first ever mine rescue team comprised of state agency personnel.
Before the formation of the new state team, mine rescue teams had been comprised of miners and job site supervisors who volunteer and train to handle mining mishaps ranging from collapses to explosions.

The new DMME team will serve as a backup to emergency responders and company mine rescue teams at every mine site in the state.
