VA Drug Overdoses On The Rise

Officials in Virginia are struggling with a rise in heroin and prescription opioid deaths.

The state is on track to have more than 850 drug related deaths in 2015.

That number is up 9% from 2014.

Authorities expect 2016 to reach over 1,000 drug related deaths.

Virginia’s Governor Terry McAuliffe’s administration say they’re working to curb drug overdose deaths, but it will take a while to see the impact.

A governor’s task force on the issue is recommending several steps, including requiring doctors to be trained in how to prescribe opioids.
