Miners with a General Coal Miner Surface certification will be eligible to work in the mineral mining industry beginning on January 15, 2016. Before now, additional training was required to make the transition, but the Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy is trying to help those displaced by the coal industry layoffs. Electricians certified by DMME's Division of Mines are also able to work in the mineral industry with no additional training.
There are currently 444 permitted mineral mines across Virginia. Workers transitioning from coal to minerals can receive a new certification by contacting DMME's Division of Mineral Mining in Charlottesville at 434-951-6315.
