Stone Mountain Trail Opening Saturday, Oct. 10

Spearhead Trails will open their fourth trail Saturday with the trail head located in Pennington Gap at Leeman Field, along with an RV Park and Greenway. Field Operations Supervisor Chris Sturgill says they hope the Stone Mountain Trail can help get southwest Virginia back on track after the steep economic decline that followed the downturn in the coal industry. mayor Larry Holbrook says the ATV-friendly road designations will allow riders to visit local stores and restaurants after riding all day, hopefully stimulating the local economy. Pennington Gap is now an OHV-friendly town from sunup to sundown on Friday Saturday and Sunday only. But the trail itself will be open 7 days a week.
It consists of more than 30 miles of challenging terrain for  experienced riders with intermediate to advanced level trails and nine overlook vistas never before offered to the public. The spearhead trails website says this is considered a technical trail as it is a blue and black rated system appealing to intermediate riders with families but also offers challenges for the hard-core enthusiast.
Riders can obtain one day permits for $15 at a number of local retailers. That list can be found at Spearheadtrails.com. Annual permits are $50 and give access to all Spearhead Trails.
