Statewide Tornado Drills

Severe weather season often increases during March, April and May. During these three months we usually experience the most hail and damaging winds since tornados can pop up quickly.
In Virginia, statewide tornado drills are performed once a year with area schools ensuring that students are prepared for what to do in case of an actual emergency. Many procedures have evolved over the years to guarantee maximum safety. The newest being that students are kept closer together in a central location of their school.
Warnings signs of an approaching tornado may include a dark, greenish sky with low-lying clouds, hail and loud rumbling sounds very similar to thunder. Experts now suggest going to the lowest part of your home, away from all windows and doors, with an emergency kit ready, and to establish a plan suitable for school, work, church and at home before the situation arises.
