Simple Marijuana Possession in Commonwealth

In today’s local news is the announcement that yes, simple possession of Marijuana is to no longer be considered as a criminal offense in the Commonwealth. Going into effect this July 1st, Northam signed it into law that decriminalized possession of marijuana. Northam also stated that he hopes to clear the records of Virginia residents who have previously gotten into legal troubles because of marijuana possession. Northam’s new law will reduce the penalty for Simple Possession of Marijuana to a Civil Penalty with a maximum fine of $25. However, this does not mean the General Assembly has legalized marijuana, it remains illegal.
