Scott County Litter Awareness Month

April is Scott County Litter Awareness month and they’d like to remind everyone that litter can result in a decline in tourism, business and industry, as well as housing. Focusing on small improvements like reducing litter, creates a safer and more economically viable community.
Not only does litter decrease property values by more than 7%, it discouraged developers from investing in new housing development. If companies see litter along roads and parks, it may negatively influence their opinion of the people and the area, thereby making them consider building or locating somewhere else.
Additionally, litter places an unnecessary burden on tax payers as they have to bear the expense of cleaning it up. Littering is punishable by up to twelve months in jail and a fine of not less than $250 or more than $2,500, either or both.
In lieu of jail time, the court may order the defendant instead to perform a mandatory minimum of ten hours of community service in litter abatement activities.
