Saturday night storms trap mother and child in car, cause power outages

Around 8:30 Saturday evening, a line of severe thunderstorms moved into Lee County – knocking down trees in western and central parts of the county.

Lee County Sheriff Gary Parsons tells News 5 that one tree fell on a car, trapping a mother and her child for some time.  Power lines kept emergency services from being able to get to the car.  The mom and child were able to be rescued with only minor injuries.

Virginia Department of Transportation worked to clear multiple trees from roadways.

Power outages were also reported on the west side of the county, lasting as much as six hours.
