Press Release Filing Income Tax in 2021

Commissioner of the Revenue Office set to begin 2020 income tax return preparation on February 16, 2021. Free online service also offered this year.

Jonesville, VA – Pursuant to Virginia Code 58.1-3108, notice is hereby given, informing taxpayers that they can file their Virginia State Tax Return at the Lee County Commissioner of the Revenue Office. Our office is also a certified Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site, which will fill out and electronically file state and federal income tax returns free of charge.
The IRS recently stated that they will not be accepting 2020 tax returns until February 12, 2021. The February 12 start date allows the IRS time to do additional programming and testing of IRS systems following the December 27 tax law changes that provided a second round of Economic Impact Payments and other benefits. We will be using February 12 as an internal test date for all of our software and systems to ensure they are working properly before beginning to prepare individual income tax returns on February 16, 2021.
There will also be changes in the operation of the VITA program this year due to COVID-19 protocols and safety procedures. To continue being able to offer this program, the in-person VITA income tax service will be offered by appointment only this year. To schedule your appointment, you can go to our website at and click on the “Schedule Appointment” link that is located under the Income Tax Tab of our webpage. When scheduling your appointment from the calendar on the website, you must submit your name, email address and telephone number. Once scheduled, you will receive an email that confirms your appointment. Alternatively, you can call us at (276) 346-7722 to schedule your appointment, but we will still need your name, email address and telephone number to complete the scheduling process. Citizens may also file their tax returns online, free of charge, by visiting our website at and click on the “Free Online Filing” link that is located under the Income Tax Tab of our webpage. Once there, you will find multiple links to choose from that allow you to file your Federal and State Income Tax returns free of charge. Please select the partner link that best describes your age, income, etc. to file your own tax return. If possible, we encourage citizens to utilize these online links to help us reduce in office visits as much as possible during this time.
The VITA program is set up for low to moderate income families and individuals that are filing non-complex personal income tax returns. The Lee County Commissioner of the Revenue Office is located in the Lee County Courthouse at 33640 Main Street, Suite 107, Jonesville, VA 24263.
