Press Release Arrests Made in Shooting Incident

On February 3, 2020, shortly after midnight, Wise County Central Dispatch received a 911 call from a female that had been shot in the back. She was located in a car at the end of Limestone Road in a cemetery behind the Stephens Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. Norton Police Department arrived on scene to assist and located two individuals with gunshot wounds. Emergency workers from Wise Rescue Squad arrived on scene and treated a female that had been shot in the back. A second person was lying on the ground at the scene and was pronounced deceased. Officers from the Wise County Sheriff's Office and Norton Police Department, while searching the area, located a third person who had been shot and was identified as William Mattias Mills. Mills was hiding in the woods and had been shot multiple times. Mills told first responders that the female had picked him up and took him to a secluded location. Mills said that, upon arrival, someone pulled open the driver's side door and began shooting at him. He said that he was able to get out of the car and run away from the scene.
After interviewing multiple witnesses in relation to the shooting investigation, officers questioned Jarred Ray Hash later on February 3, 2020. During the interview, Hash made statements that he was one of four individuals that went to the cemetery late in the evening of February 2, 2020. Hash reported that the female brought Mills to the cemetery with the intention of Christopher Dale Stevens to confront and assault Mills. Hash said that he waited in the woods while Mills was confronted. Hash said that he then heard two or three gunshots and went to the vehicle armed with a firearm. Hash said that he pulled his weapon and fired multiple times at Mills. Hash said that when Mills attempted to run away into the woods, Hash chased him with the gun and kept firing at him multiple times. William Mattias Mills was transported by air to a trauma center in eastern Tennessee. Investigators were informed that Mills had multiple gunshot wounds that were non-life threatening. He was treated and released from the hospital. He is currently being held in jail in eastern Tennessee on fugitive charges from Virginia and awaiting extradition. Tennessee authorities obtained the fugitive warrant due to a pending assault and battery charge on Mills, not directly related to the shooting incident.
Jarred Ray Hash, age 39, and of 7313 Rasnick Road, Norton, VA was charged with Aggravated Malicious Wounding of Mills and Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony. He is currently being held without bond at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail at Duffield.
The female identified in the incident is currently being treated for injuries sustained during the shooting. She was transported by air to a trauma center in eastern Tennessee. She is currently listed as being in stable condition.
The deceased male has been identified as Christopher Dale Stevens, age 39, of Norton. The investigation into his death is still ongoing and further details cannot be released at this time due to the active and ongoing investigation.
Multiple agencies assisted with these investigations, including the Wise County Sheriff's Department, the Virginia State Police, City of Norton Police Department, Town of Wise Police Department, and the Wise County/City of Norton Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.
