Possible New Bill to Expand Communication Device Usages in Vehicles

A Bill recently passed in both the Senate and the House that would expand the existing law that bans texting or writing an email while driving to include using a personal handheld communication device while operating a motor vehicle for everyone unless the device is designed specifically to allow hands free and voice operation. Local residents think the expansion to ban holding your phone while driving is a great idea.
The DMV records show that in 2018 there were 182 vehicular crashes that were caused by drivers texting while driving. 83 of those distracted driving accident included injuries with one fatality.
In order to become law next January the Governor would need to sign the bill. If passed the new law would would find drivers given a $125 fine for their first offense and $250 for their second offense.
