Pennington Gap Town Council Cancels Most Holiday Events

At a recent Recessed Meeting of the Pennington Gap Town Council, the council members voted on and agreed to perform a “virtual” tree lighting ceremony for the annual Christmas Tree event at Bicentennial Park.
Although previously approved the council changed their prior decision to holding Leeman Christmas Fantasy at Leeman Field with people remaining inside their vehicle and no contact donation methods available. Other Christmas events were not so lucky. Activities like the Christmas Parade and the New Year’s Eve Ball Drop at nearby Leeman Field were both cancelled due to a lack of interest.
Keith Harless, Pennington Gap Town Manager talked about the challenges of being able to offer a “traditional” parade or ball drop ceremony while also adhering to the Governor’s executive orders regarding pandemic safety precautions. He went on to add that the town’s insurance provider had recommended they act on the side of caution.
Town resident and former Fire Department Chief James Skidmore was chosen to serve as the official tree lighter for the ceremony that will take place Friday evening, December 4, 2020 at 6pm.
