Officers Cracking Down on Wise County Bear-Feeding

Wise County Police are warning citizens against feeding bears at The South Fork Convenience Center in Pound, Virginia.
Virginia Conservation Police Officer Mark VanDyke said people are hand-feeding black bears, believing them to be docile. VanDyke says because they’re wild, they are still unpredictable and can quickly become aggressive.

Officers now wait in unmarked cars and normal clothes handing out citations when they catch people littering and feeding the bears. Citations can result in jail time and $2500 fines.
Officers recommended the county install bear-proof lids and an electric fence.
