Nationally Teachers Are Against Arming Lee County Teachers

According to the latest Press Release from Associated Press; Teachers are against the idea of carrying weapons into classrooms. But not in the westernmost county of Virginia, where lost revenues from growing tobacco and mining coal have left the local government unable to afford more than just four resource officers to protect  their 11 schools.
Regardless of strong criticism from the state capitol, the Lee County School Board has voted to become Virginia's first county to arm their teachers and staff. Their next step would be to ask a judge to exempt them from Virginia state law. Board Member Rob Hines stated that they had been informally discussing arming teachers well over a year before the Parkland, Florida shooting that resulted in the death of 17 people.
"You can sit around and you can plan and you can think about things, but at some point, you've got to do something," Hines said. "We have a sworn duty to protect our children and our staff, and that's what we're trying to do."
Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring is pondering his next move since "Virginia law clearly prohibits guns in schools with only a few narrow exceptions, and there are good reasons for that," according to Herring's spokesman, Michael Kelly.
The Board plans to ask a circuit court judge to designate school employees that carry concealed guns or keep them in school safes to be "conservators of the peace," a designation that the board believes would exempt them from the law that bars guns on school property.
The Virginia Department of Education appeared to be caught by surprise by the plan that was approved unanimously last week by the school board. School districts in several states, including Texas, Missouri and Ohio already allow teachers to carry guns at school.
Since June when they discussed the plan, Hines stated that 37 teachers and staff members have submitted their applications to volunteer to carry guns in school; and that additionally numerous others have asked how they could apply to be a volunteer.
