Scott County Sheriff John Puckett has identified the men involved in the murder-suicide on Tuesday in the Pattonsville area of Scott County as Cecil Clendenen, 70, and Haskel Philip Bledsoe Sr., 75. Investigators told TimesNews that evidence indicates Bledsoe was the gunman. He had worked full-time on Clendenen’s farm for three decades.
“During the investigation, you find that both of them were upstanding citizens, both well liked,” Puckett told the Times-News. “It’s just a shock to the community that it happened.”
Police say Clendenen’s wife called dispatch on Tuesday morning. A deputy responded to their farm just west of Duffield, to find Clendenen dead near a barn. Puckett said Clendenen had been shot multiple times, but there was no witness to the actual shooting.
Police soon located their possible suspect, Bledsoe, at his own residence just a half-mile away. Puckett says Bledsoe was dead from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot to the head. Authorities recovered two firearms at the scene.
The state medical examiner’s office in Roanoke has examined both bodies to confirm the cause of death.
Puckett says possible motives are being considered but released no further information as the investigation is on-going.
