MECC hosting ‘Sweet Folk Instrument’ workshop

The instrument workshop pre-registration deadline is next Monday (March 14) for Mountain Empire Community College's 2016 Gathering of the Sweet Folk Instruments.

The fourth annual 'Sweet Folk' event will introduce and promote the autoharp, lap dulcimers, penny whistle and bodhran (Irish drum) to beginning musicians and hone the knowledge and skills of seasoned musicians.

The goal of MECC's latest program to its fleet of traditional music progams is to preserve the traditional performance of the autoharp and lap dulcimemr by attracting and teaching youth and adults the culture and musical heritage of the region.

The 'Sweet Folk' Gathering was launched in 2013 after the college's music faculty became concerned with low participation in performance classes for autoharp and lap dulcimer, according to Gathering organizer Michael Gilley.
