Local Schools Receive VIP Awards

Governor Terry McAuliffe and the Virginia Board of Education have announced the 2015 Virginia Index of Performance Awards, recognizing schools and divisions that exceed state and federal accountability standards. According to the Department of Education website, five schools in our area were awarded Distinguished Achievement Awards including St. Charles Elementary in Lee County and Central High, Coeburn Primary, Eastside High, and St. Paul Elementary in Wise County. These schools met all state and federal benchmarks and made progress toward the goals of the governor and the board.
Governor McAuliffe says, “These schools and divisions are laboratories for innovation that are preparing young Virginians to compete and succeed in a new Virginia economy. (He) congratulates the students, teachers, principals, and communities whose efforts have turned their schools into leader in training the workforce of the future.” He also encourages these schools to take time before the end of the school year to celebrate their accomplishment.
