Local Law Enforcement Warning Against IRS Phone Scam

The Wise County Sheriff's Office has received a number of complaints of an IRS phone scam. Residents have received phone calls in which the call claims to be representing the IRS and pressures the citizens to pay taxes that they say are owed. Often these residents are requested to provide banking or credit card information. Sheriff Oakes wants to remind citizens never to provide this important information over the phone. This scam has been around for some time and we have been advised that the IRS will never solicit payment over the phone.
If you receive a call from someone claiming to be the IRS you should not provide any personal information, but try to get a call back name and number then hang up. If you feel your identity has been compromised, please contact your local law enforcement agency.
