Lee students travel to Richmond to meet state leaders

Eight students from Southwest Virginia had the opportunity to visit the State Capitol in Richmond this week. Virginia 1st District Del. Terry Kilgore, R-Gate City, and his wife Debbie, who annually host students from each of the high schools in the First District, have sponsored L.E.A.P. (Legislative Educational Advancement Program) since 1994.

The students were taken on a tour of the State Capitol, a tour of the Governor’s Executive Mansion and attended a live session of Virginia’s General Assembly.

In addition, they had the opportunity to meet with several state leaders, including Governor Terry McAuliffe and Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam, as well as Speaker of the House, William J. Howell (28th House District), and State Senators Bill Carrico (40th Senate District) and Ben Chafin (38th Senate District).

The students participating this year included

Katie Catron from Thomas Walker High School; Corey Stewart from Lee High

The group was recognized by Kilgore on the House floor during a session of the General Assembly on Monday.
