Lee County Prison Break Foiled

The Virginia Department of Corrections calls a breakout attempt Friday the first serious attempt to escape from the Lee County United States Prison in its 13 year history. Inmates tried to breach a secure area of the prison at 7:30 in the morning, but were captured before they could get beyond the secure perimeter of the prison. Names of those attempting to escape weren’t immediately released but everybody was accounted for and the 16 hundred inmates were placed on lockdown. Initial reports said two inmates tried to get out of the penitentiary off Hickory Flats Road in Pennington Gap.
