Lee County Extension Office Offering Well Water Testing

Area families that still rely on a well or spring as their source of water are responsible for testing their water’s quality, in addition to maintaining the water system and dealing with any issues that might arise. Thankfully the Lee County Extension Office is offering affordable and confidential water testing, along with an explanation of the results and education.
Kits will be available for water testing on Monday and Tuesday, August 24th and 25th. at the Lee County Extension Office, from 8:30am-4:30pm. The office is located in Pennington Gap, at 486 Industrial Drive. When you arrive at the office, they are asking everyone to remain in your vehicle and call 276-546-2057, and someone will deliver your test kits to you.
Water samples will need to be returned to the Lee County Extension office, on Wednesday, August 26th, 2020, anytime that morning from 7:30am-9:00am. You may also drop off your water samples at the Super Dollar located in Rose Hill, Va from 7:30am until 8:00am.
The water samples will be tested for fourteen different parameters, among which will include bacteria, hardness, metals and nitrate. All testing is done on a voluntary basis and the test results are completely confidential. Testing costs are $60 per test.
Test results along with maintenance information and water system care information, will be sent to each participant by mail or email. There will also be a live or pre-recorded presentation made available that will help explain the results and suggested recommendations to deal with any potential problems.
To register for this water testing, please contact Amy Byington by phone at 276-546-2057, or by email at afannon@vt.edu. For additional information on the Virginia Household Water Quality Program, and relevant resources for those with private water systems, please visit www.wellwater.bse.vt.edu.
