Tip leads LCSO to huge indoor marijuana growing operation

A search in the Shavers Ford section of Lee County on Friday afternoon has located a huge indoor marijuana growing operation, along with several firearms and cash.

Lee County Sheriff Gary Parsons reports that officers operating on an informant tip went to a trailer located at 536 Shaver Ford Road Jonesville. Lieutenant A.J. McQueen upon approaching the residence detected the strong odor of marijuana. He then asked for consent to search which was granted.

Parsons said that once inside officers discovered a huge indoor growing operation with all of the equipment including sunlamps. There were 122 marijuana plants approximately 4 feet high, along with a large amount of processed marijuana. Officers also found 13 guns and $640.00 in cash.

According to Parsons the occupant of the residence 31 year old Colby Ray Baird was charged with Manufacturing Marijuana, Possession with intent to distribute Marijuana, and Possession of firearms in connection with drug distribution. Baird is held in the Duffield Regional Jail without bond.

Parsons said that this is a significant seizure. Based on Virginia State Police estimates as to the street value of a mature marijuana plant, the value of the growing plants alone would amount to $366,000.00.
