Lawsuit Filed in Lee County Circuit Court

Locally a lawsuit has been filed in Lee County Circuit Court against state officials that had ruled against the plan to allow public school teachers to be armed for security reasons.
In response to an agency action rendered by the Department of Criminal Justice Services last August that killed the proposal to make Superintendent of Schools Brian Austin a Conservator of the Peace that would have given him the necessary authority to arm select personnel at area schools with firearms is the basis for the suit.
Lee County School Board Chairman, Debbie Jessee, released an official statement on the subject saying, "It is important for the members of our community to know that keeping the children in our schools safe is a top priority for every member of the school board. This lawsuit is intended to simply allow our school board to proceed to use another important option in keeping our children safe."
