High Speed Chase

A high speed chase occured in Wise, VA on Friday, December 12.  According to a press release,Wise County Sheriff's Deputy, Sgt. Ryan Phillips, attempeted to stop Richard Harold Cantrell, 47, Pound for a traffic violation. Cantrell went several miles at a high rate of speed. Wise County Deputy Lt. Keith Crabtree was able to deploy spike strips, which deflated the vehicle's tires, and safely brought the vehicle to a stop.

Cantrell, was taken into custody without further incident. During the pursuit Mr. Cantrell hit another vehicle causing injury to that driver. Richard Cantrell was charged with felony eluding, felony hit & run, felony driving after being declared an habitual offender, no liability insurance, and defective equipment. He is currently being held at Southwest Virginia Regional jail in Duffield, VA with no bond. Pound Police and Wise Police Departments assisted with the pursuit.

<p>On 12/12/2014 Wise County Sheriff's Deputy, Sgt. Ryan Phillips, was patrolling route 23 in Norton, VA and attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation.  The vehicle pulled into Advance Auto Parts, then immediately accelerated attempting to flee.  The vehicle proceeded through downtown Wise, VA and back to route 23 northbound toward Pound, VA.  The vehicle continued for several miles at a high rate of speed.  Wise County Deputy Lt. Keith Crabtree was able to deploy spike strips, which deflated the vehicle's tires, and safely brought the vehicle to a stop. The driver, Richard Harold Cantrell age 47 of 10724 Challenger Road Pound, VA, was taken into custody without further incident.  During the pursuit Mr. Cantrell hit another vehicle causing injury to that driver. Richard Cantrell was charged with felony eluding, felony hit & run, felony driving after being declared an habitual offender, no liability insurance, and defective equipment.
