Eighteen people have been arrested by the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office in a drug roundup on Wednesday, involving 15 law enforcement officers. The Harlan, Evarts, and Loyall city police departments, along with the Kentucky State Police, aided in the roundup that started with 23 drug trafficking indictments. In addition, seven district court warrants and one Kentucky Parole Board violation warrant were served. The Harlan County Sheriff’s Office narcotics detectives have undergone undercover drug investigations leading up to the arrests. According to a press release, Harlan County Sheriff, Leslie Smith says “the most important part is the safety of the officers involved.” The operation is ongoing, and beginning July 1st, one officer will be dedicated to the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas Task Force.
The Lee County Hospital Authority Meeting originally scheduled for Wednesday, May 27th has been rescheduled for next Tuesday, June 1st at 3:00 p.m. at the Pennington Gap Community Center.
