The Federal Trade Commission has issued a report to formally oppose the proposed merger between Mountain States Health Alliance and Wellmont Health System.
A joint statement from Mountain States Health Alliance and Wellmont Health System says they were not aware of any opposition raised by the Federal Trade Commission and said several omissions and mistakes were made in their report. The statement also stated that the letter from the FTC was "full of opinions and speculation".
The FTC says the merger presents substantial risk of serious competitive and consumer harm in the form of higher healthcare costs, lower quality, reduced innovation, and reduced access to care. They added, "Together they would hold a near-monopoly over inpatient services in the area."
The two health care providers said in their report issued Tuesday that they plan to respond to the Southwest Virginia Health Authority by October 10.
