Firefighters continue to battle a pair of wildfires in Wise County, one of which has been burning for almost two weeks along the Kentucky border north of Pound. The other is threatening the High Knob area above Norton.
The U.S. Forest Service Clinch Ranger District reports that the West Chaparral fire, located on High Knob in an area north of Forest Road 704 (Mountain Fork Road) and west of the Robinson Knob community, was approximately 125 acres in size and containment efforts were ongoing by USFS personnel.
Control efforts are being focused on protecting homes.
Helicopters are still helping firefighters contian The Raven Rock fire that spilled over from Kentucky above Jenkins, Ky. nearly two weeks ago.
Man roads in the areas affected are temporarily closed.
The USFS cautions residents to be especially careful driving on roads along Pine Mountain near Pound as smoke may impair visibility. The USFS asks motorists to slow down, watch out for smoke from the fires, and anticipate slow moving traffic.
Also, hunters are advised that while specific hunting seasons are currently in effect, the Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries prohibits hunting in areas adjacent to a forest fire.
