In a press conference on late last week, Governor Ralph Northam announced that starting on September the 1st, state employees must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination. This executive order will require proof of vaccination for exectuvite branch employees including at-will, classified, waged and other salaried employees including workers at the Department of Motor Vehicles, Virginia Employment Commission and Virginia State Police. However, this order does not cover the K-12 staff and teachers nor legislative or judicial branches of government. With this announcement, a press release received on Friday from Brian Dean, Division Superintendent of Lee County Public Schools, updated the mask requirement in our local school division. The release states that beginning today, Monday August 9, masks will be required for all students, staff and visitors while inside all Lee County Public School buildings regardless of vaccination status. This moves comes from data from the CDC Covid-19 Data Tracker indicating our area is in the substantial level of community transmission.
