The annual Backpacks Unite program is underway, keeping kids fed during weekends and holidays.
For six years now Food City and United Way of southwest Virginia have teamed up to send food-filled backpacks home with kids who may not have hot meals outside of school.
The program feeds more than 800 students a year and is ready to expand.
They need sponsor organizations to adopt schools in Lee, Scott, Smyth, and Giles counties.
Businesses make a donation for the food then, every six weeks pack the backpacks, and take them to the school.
