Alpha Natural Resources Files Bankruptcy

Alpha Natural Resources has officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as of Monday. The company operates nearly 60 coal mines, a number of which provide many jobs in our region. Alpha alerted 292 employees of possible layoffs last month. The downturn in the coal mining industry has resulted in numerous job losses for Lee County Residents. Alpha makes this announcement on the heels of the Joy Global layoff of 55 employees last week. Alpha now says they will “seek the necessary immediate relief from the Bankruptcy Court that will allow normal business operations to continue uninterrupted while in Chapter 11, with coal being mined, customer commitments honored, and wages and benefits for Alpha’s affiliated employees paid”.
