Almost $2 Million Granted To Help Those Affected By Coal Industry Layoffs

Almost $2 million has been awarded to help Southwest Virginia workers affected by coal mining industry layoffs rejoin workforce. The grant comes from the U.S. Department of Labor and the funds will help about 210 workers affected by layoffs from Alpha Natural Resources, providing affected workers with career services and training.

These awards range from $500,000 to $2 million and support the planning of workforce strategies for regions and communities negatively impacted by changes in the coal economy. Grants will be awarded on a rolling basis through June 30, 2017.
