21st Virginia-Kentucky Border to Border Checkpoint

The Wise County Sheriff’s Office coordinated the 21st Virginia/Kentucky Border to Border Checkpoint with eleven other agencies from Virginia and Kentucky on Route 23 at the Va/Ky line. It’s designed to encourage travelers to buckle up and discourage drinking and driving during holiday weekends. It was part of the National Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click it or Ticket initiatives conducted at the same time each year.
The thirty three participating officers represented the Wise County Sheriff’s Office, City of Norton Police Department, Saint Paul, Wise Police Department, Virginia State Police, Coeburn Police Department, Virginia’s DMV Commercial Enforcement, Chuck Slemp III, Commonwealth’s Attorney for Wise County & the city of Norton, Kentucky State Police, Letcher County Sheriff’s Office and the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety.
These participants were treated to a delicious breakfast by The Pine at Raven Rock in Jenkins, Kentucky before the beginning of the checkpoint hosted by the Wise County Sheriff’s Office. Later that afternoon the Virginia agencies set up another checkpoint for Operation 58 on Route 58 near Coeburn Virginia.
The enforcement activities continued all weekend with Assistant Sheriff Colonel Grant Kilgore attending the coordination meeting and breakfast. Kilgore stated, “A great bunch of dedicated officers and it’s impressive how well all of these agencies work together to make sure our motorists stay safe this Labor Day Weekend.”
