$20 Million Endowment for UVA at Wise

Due to a twenty million dollar endowment, future local college students could possibly receive a free four year degree at the University of Virginia's College at Wise. UVA of Wise is offering more than one hundred full tuition scholarship that begin in the fall of 2018.
Rusty Necessary, Vice Chancellor for enrollment management and student life stated, "I think for us it's a game changer. I think that any admissions director in my position would be ecstatic by the generosity of the Smith Family Foundation.
Focusing on local students their plan is to create three scholarship programs with many of the scholarships to require some community service. Half of the endowment was donated by longtime donor Hunter Smith and is being matcched by the school's Bicentennial Fund.
Chancellor, Donna Henry stated, "We want to increase access and one of the issues that many of our students say they have is being able to afford a college education, and this will give them the opportunity to come to school and not have to worry about the debt."
Currently the University of Virginia's College at Wise is taking applications for the new scholarship and also stated that some of the money will be available to fund study abroad and research opportunities.
