2 arrested after child welfare check in Pennington Gap

A man and woman were arrested Friday in Pennington Gap following a child welfare check.

Sheriff Gary Parsons says officers traveled to Right Poor Valley Road in Pennington Gap to perform a welfare check on a 5-year-old who was reported to be in a dangerous environment, where they found the mother of the child, 27-year-old Amanda Gail Woody as well as an unidentified man. The man gave officers a false name which Woody claimed was true. The man then ran from the house and officers found him behind the residence.

He was identified as 24-year-old David Ray Carpenter of Gastonia, N.C where he is wanted for violation of probation.

Carpenter is being held in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail on Duffield on a $5,000 bond.

Woody was arrested for obstruction and justice and was released after posting a $1,500 bond.

Child Protective Services were contacted and released the child to a family member.
