Public Hearing for untility increase

The State Corporation Commission will hold a public hearing in Norton on June 24th. Kentucky Utilities company wants to talk about a rate increase. Kentucky Utility here is of course Old Dominion Power and want to propose about a $10 per month increase. There will be two meetings on the 24th, one at 4 and one at 7 at Norton City Council Chambers.

Man and Horse Drown

Officials with the U.S. Forest Service are still trying to piece together how a man and his horse drowned this weekend at Bark Lake Camp. The Coalfield Progress reports the man has been identified as 55-year-old Steven Burke. Clinch District Ranger Jorge Hersel says the preliminary investigation indicates the man took his horse to a lake so it could get a drink. The horse entered the water and Burke went in after it. The horse became scared and went under. Hersel believes the man may have gotten tangled up with the stirrups. Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor. The investigation continues.

St. Charles Water Authoirty meets tonight

St. Charles Water and Sewer Authority will meet on today, 4pm for a regular monthly board meeting in the Authority’s board room, downtown St. Charles.

PG Town Council meeting

Long meeting last night for the Pennington Gap Town Council. There was a budget hearing first that many people attended. Then they went into their regular reports from the Police and Fire department, the director of the Leeman Field Pool gave a report. There were project updates from the Water and Sewer Plant and a change order from BurWil Construction for the Lee theatre Sound System that was ok’d. They also set July 1st for an organizational meeting and ok’d the blacktopping of the Main Street Parking lot.

Drowning victim from Nicklesville

We told you about that drowning over the weekend at Bark Camp Lake. The victim identified as Steve Burke of Nicklesville. Apparently Burke took his horse to the lake for a drink of water, the horse got spooked and jumped into the water and they believe Burke’s foot got caught in the stirrup. Friends tried CPR when they got him out of the water but it was too late. Saturday happened to be his 25th wedding anniversary. He also leaves behind a 21 year old daughter.

TN man arrested in Gate City

Gate City police arrested a Church Hill, Tennessee man on charges of rape. Scotty Lee Bishop was arrested by Kingsport police Sunday. A victim told police that Bishop gave her what he said was a diet pill and then asked her to have sex several times. When she said no, he allegedly raped her. She had some sort of reaction to the pill and was rushed to the hospital. When arrested, Bishop told police it was a ‘sexual enhancement pill.’ He’s currently in Kingsport’s city jail awaiting extradition to Scott County.

Lee County Board of Supervisors will meet tomorrow in the General District Courtroom of the Lee County Courthouse in Jonesville. They will be taking comments on several items including a proposed ordinance to amend the license tax imposed on coal and gas severance, a proposed zooming text amendment in regards to crematory or crematoriums and their special use permits, and one to be added to crematoriums that handles the disposal of animals.

Farmers Market open tomorrow

The Pennington Gap Farmer’s Market is opening tomorrow and every Saturday from 9 to 1 at Leeman Field Park. Locally grown produce, plants, flowers, along with locally made jellies, jams, baked goods and homemade crafts.

Bad weather yesterday

We had some bad weather yesterday so today crews are still cleaning up. You may find some tree limbs and other debris in the roads, plus those places subject to low lying flooding may have some deep puddles! Some lost power during the storms, the electric company has been working all night to get everyone restored. Winds were clocked at over 65 miles per hour in our area and we officially got about a half inch of rain. Seems like more.
